Altos Labs

$3B cellular-rejuvenation company built like a research institute; nearly five years in, still without a disclosed clinical candidate.

1. Core Product / Service

Altos Labs launched publicly on 19 January 2022 with $3B in committed capital, the largest launch in biotech history [1]. It is organised as institutes:

  • Three Institutes of Science: Bay Area (Redwood City), San Diego, and Cambridge UK [1]
  • An Institute of Medicine
  • An Institute of Computation, opened in August 2024 [2]

Its scientific thesis is cellular rejuvenation programming: partial epigenetic reprogramming and related mechanisms that restore cell health and resilience.

As of October 2026 there is no disclosed IND, clinical candidate or Altos-sponsored trial, and a ClinicalTrials.gov sponsor search returns zero studies [2]. Steps towards the clinic:

  • May 2025: acquired Dorian Therapeutics, a Stanford spinout with preclinical small-molecule "senoblockers" for lung fibrosis and osteoarthritis. Terms were not disclosed [2].
  • August 2025: hired Joan Mannick (resTORbio, Tornado) as CMO and Head of Product Development [5].

2. Target Users & Pain Points

  • Long-run target: age-related and degenerative diseases, where restoring cell function rather than blocking one pathway could address several conditions at once.
  • Near-term: no product users. Its "customers" are effectively its own clinical development group and future partners.

3. Competitive Landscape

Player Approach Note
newlimit Epigenetic reprogramming via pooled screens Raised $435M in June 2026; targets first human trial in 2027
retro-biosciences Autophagy, iPSC-derived blood and microglia Smaller budget; has in-house cGMP cell manufacturing
Life Biosciences Partial reprogramming (ER-100, optic neuropathy) IND cleared January 2026. Some aggregators wrongly credit this to Altos [2]

4. Unique Observations

  • Wet lab at institute scale, with GMP manufacturing outsourced. Reported footprint across three sites:

    Site Space Detail
Cambridge UK (Granta Park) ~51,000 sq ft, 10-year lease Fit-out designed for ~150 researchers [3]
San Diego ~123,000 sq ft built out across two buildings ~60% lab, including an 18,270 sq ft vivarium (contractor page) [4]
Redwood City Reported as anything from ~168,000 to ~250,000 sq ft Sources conflict [2]

That makes Altos's footprint several times the 50–90k sq ft typical of the 2023+ AI-bio cohort. Mid-2026 job postings describe in-house process development across mRNA-LNP, AAV and protein. The same postings describe "outsourced GMP manufacturing" with unnamed CDMOs [6].

  • Modality breadth before the first IND. Altos is building process development for three biologic modalities while also holding small molecules from Dorian. Its first clinical asset may well be a conventional small molecule rather than a reprogramming therapy.

  • Signs of a 2026 reshuffle. Founding Bay Area institute director Peter Walter moved to the Buck Institute in April 2026 [7], and other senior scientists have reportedly left. Infrastructure hiring (vivarium, process development) continued.

5. Financials / Funding

  • Launch (January 2022): $3B committed. Reported backers include Yuri Milner, Jeff Bezos and ARCH's Robert Nelsen, though investor names were never formally confirmed [1].
  • Aggregators describe a February 2024 "Series C" of $1.5B as a drawdown of the original commitment. Their cumulative totals ($3.3B to $5.6B) conflict and have not been verified [2].
  • There is no SEC Form D on file and no reliable valuation.

6. People & Relationships

  • CEO: Hal Barron (former GSK CSO and President, R&D) [1].
  • Co-founders and co-chairs: Rick Klausner (Chief Scientist), Hans Bishop (President; ex-Juno CEO) [1].
  • Institute leaders at launch: Peter Walter, Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte, Wolf Reik. Hana El-Samad leads the Institute of Computation [1][2].
  • Peers: newlimit, retro-biosciences.
