Bioyond Robotics (奔曜科技)

A Shanghai company led by former ABB Robotics executives that sells standardized, modular benchtop lab robots in China and abroad.

1. Core Product / Service

Shanghai Benyao Technology Co., Ltd. (上海奔曜科技有限公司), founded 2021-03-26, sells a catalogue of standard products rather than custom integration projects:

  • LabGenius hardware. G3, G5 and G7 benchtop pipetting robots, from single-arm modular units up to dual-arm, ultra-high-throughput open-deck platforms. S-series compact plate movers with force-controlled grippers and vision. M-series mobile robots that move materials between labs.
  • LabMate configurations. Ready-made combinations of G- and S-series units: Gleam, Polar, Horizon, and Beacon (a vertical unit with a consumable stacker).
  • Software and other products. LabMind, lab software with a device-driver library for third-party instruments, and the BIOYOND AutoSeq genetic-analysis system.
  • Custom projects. Larger installations for drug screening, synthetic biology, cell and gene therapy, omics and clinical diagnostics.
  • ODM. The website offers ODM partnering. No partners are named.

The public website gives no numeric specifications and no prices. In 2025 the company began building a manufacturing base of about RMB 100M in Nanjing Jiangbei New Area, with planned capacity of about 1,000 robots a year.

2. Target Users & Pain Points

  • Who buys. Pharma and biotech R&D, CROs, synthetic-biology and omics labs, clinical diagnostics, materials and agriculture labs, universities and government institutes.
  • Pain solved. Skilled lab technicians are scarce and getting more expensive, and manual pipetting is error-prone. Bioyond sells "zero-threshold" automation that runs unattended 24/7 and that a bench scientist can set up without an automation engineer.
  • Customer claims. The company said it served "100+ well-known life-science companies" in April 2023 and "1,000+ customers" in October 2024. Both figures are self-reported. No customers are named publicly.

3. Competitive Landscape

Player Positioning Vs. Bioyond
xuanren-tech 玄刃科技 Also founded by ex-ABB staff; liquid workstations and mobile robots Same standard-product approach, smaller (≈RMB 100M raised); backed by industrial capital from GenScript
megarobo 镁伽科技 Custom lab and industrial automation integrator Roughly 10x larger by revenue, but works project by project at 24–29% gross margin; Bioyond is the capital-light opposite
xtalpi Listed AI drug discovery company with in-house robotic labs Sells results and IP rather than hardware, but holds the "autonomous lab" story Bioyond also uses in its marketing
shuye-tech 术也科技 AI pipettes and modular robots Design-led products for university labs at lower price points
Opentrons (US) Low-cost, open-source benchtop liquid handlers Most direct rival in export markets at the low end of the price range
Hamilton / Tecan / Beckman Global incumbents Lead on software ecosystems and validation history; Chinese hardware sells at roughly half their price

4. Unique Observations

  • The most product-like company in China's lab-automation cohort. Bioyond has a tiered SKU ladder (G3 → G5 → G7), sells pre-configured bundles, and goes to market through a third-party distributor (DKSH, Australia, August 2026) and ODM. This looks like an industrial-robot company's playbook rather than a systems integrator's, and it fits the founders' ABB background.
  • The customer count needs care. It rose tenfold in 18 months (100+ to 1,000+) with no named customers. That jump more likely reflects a change in what is counted (individual labs or distributor end-users) than tenfold growth on a like-for-like basis.
  • There is little evidence for the "AI" claim. Press materials now describe "AI-driven autonomous laboratory solutions," but no closed-loop AI experiment case has been published. The product evidence points to good automation hardware with scheduling software.
  • Funding has gone quiet while capacity expands. No round has been disclosed since October 2024, yet the company is building a 1,000-units-a-year plant. Local Nanjing reports credit the move to a Boyuan-managed regional fund's network, which suggests local or project-level money rather than a new equity round. This is not confirmed.
  • Liquid handling is the most crowded segment. Benchtop pipetting faces a dozen Chinese competitors plus Opentrons. Over time Bioyond will compete on distribution, service and cost unless LabMind becomes a real software moat.
  • Possible naming conflict abroad. "LabGenius" is also the name of a London AI antibody company, which may cause trademark or search confusion overseas.

5. Financials / Funding

  • Revenue, orders and margins: not disclosed. A December 2025 local-government report describes orders as "surging." No figures were given.
  • Funding rounds:
Round Date Amount Lead / participants
Angel Apr 2021 Not disclosed Lead: HongShan (Sequoia China) Seed Fund
Pre-A Jun 2021 Tens of millions of RMB Lead: Qiming. Participants: HongShan Seed, Zhangke Herun
A Feb 2023 Not disclosed Press release says "a well-known industrial fund"; one database lists WuXi AppTec instead (conflicting)
A+ Apr 2023 A and A+ ≈RMB 200M combined Co-leads: Boyuan Capital, Lilly Asia Ventures. Participants: CICC Qide; existing investors also put in more
A3 (also labelled A++) Oct 2024 "Several hundred million" RMB Lead: Panlin Capital. Participants: Qiming, Boyuan
2025 – Oct 2026 — None disclosed —
  • Total raised: about RMB 300M across the first four rounds (company figure, April 2023). Adding the A3 round, the total is likely RMB 500M or more. Aggregator figures of US$29–37M appear to leave out the A3 round.
  • Valuation: not disclosed.
  • Registered capital: RMB 4.27M or RMB 4.81M depending on the source. Neither has been confirmed against the official registry.

6. People & Relationships

  • Founder and CEO: 汤阳 (Tang Yang). He joined ABB Robotics in 2004 and later headed ABB Robotics' China R&D center and its consumer-goods and service-robotics business unit. He is the legal representative and controlling shareholder; his stake was about 28% as of October 2024 per one source. No other co-founders or a CTO are named publicly.
  • Investors: HongShan Seed, Qiming and Boyuan have each invested in at least three rounds. Lilly Asia Ventures, CICC Capital, Panlin Capital and Zhangke Herun have also invested.
  • Footprint: Headquartered in Zhangjiang / Pudong, Shanghai. Other entities and sites: a Zhuhai subsidiary and a Nanjing Jiangbei manufacturing base. The company says it has teams in Europe and the US.
  • Channel partners: DKSH, distributor for Australia since August 2026. Bioyond is scheduled to exhibit at analytica China (November 2026) and SLAS 2027 (San Diego).
  • Peers: megarobo, xuanren-tech, xtalpi, shuye-tech.
