Xuanren Technology (玄刃科技)

A small Shanghai lab-automation company founded by ex-ABB robotics engineers. It sells standardized liquid handlers and modular lab robots.

1. Core Product / Service

Xuanren (XR Technology) sells standardized, modular automation for life-science labs:

  • XR Fluent A25 liquid-handling workstation (current flagship): 8 independent channels that can each pipette a different volume, with an independent Z-axis per channel. It handles tubes, microplates and deep-well plates, and is aimed at PCR/qPCR, protein purification and NGS library prep.
  • Earlier platform (2021): the XR-AUTOLAB sample workstation, which moves samples, consumables and tools by magnetic levitation; the XR-TRANSBOT mobile manipulator; an in-house aseptic collaborative arm; and the XR-LABWARE workflow and monitoring software.
  • Fluid-control platform: handles both liquid dosing and solid-powder feeding. The company says it has extended this platform into chemistry and new-energy (battery) lab automation projects.

Price, throughput and precision (CV) figures are not published.

2. Target Users & Pain Points

  • Buyers: biopharma R&D and GMP production, IVD makers, hospitals, research institutes, biobanks, synthetic-biology and gene/cell-therapy labs. More recently also chemistry and battery-materials labs.
  • Pain points addressed: repetitive manual pipetting and sample handling, which brings labor cost, low throughput and contamination risk. Imported workstations are expensive, slow to configure and hard to operate. Xuanren pitches a compact, modular design at lower cost, with task switching that does not require downtime.

3. Competitive Landscape

Player Positioning Vs. Xuanren
benyao-tech (奔曜科技) Standardized lab robots, also founded by ex-ABB staff The most direct rival. It has more funding and media visibility, and claims far more customers
megarobo (镁伽科技) Largest Chinese custom lab-automation integrator (RMB 930M revenue in 2024) Ten times larger, but runs a heavy custom-project model with low margins. Xuanren sells standard products with a light asset base
xtalpi (晶泰科技) AI drug discovery with in-house robotic labs Sells R&D results and IP rather than equipment, so it rarely competes for the same instrument orders
shuye-tech (术也科技) AI-enabled pipettes and modular lab robots Also sells standard products, but mainly to academic labs at lower price points
Hamilton / Tecan / Beckman Global liquid-handling incumbents Stronger software ecosystems and reliability. Domestic liquid handlers sell for roughly half the price

4. Unique Observations

  • The product line has narrowed. The 2021 pitch was a fully unmanned lab built from mobile manipulators and maglev sample transport. By 2024 the lead product was a single 8-channel liquid handler. That is easier to sell and repeat, but it puts Xuanren in the most crowded segment of China's lab-automation market, where hardware barriers are falling and competition shifts to channels, service and software.
  • Capital has shifted from VC to industry and local government. Early backers were VCs (Zhangke Lingyi, Oriza Seed / 元禾原点, Shunwei). The A+ round added a Huatai / GenScript-linked vehicle, which gives a biopharma and CRO channel. The Series B (single source) came from Wuxi state capital, and a Wuxi operating entity has appeared. Together these suggest the manufacturing center of gravity is moving to Wuxi's Binhu district, likely with local siting commitments.
  • Most figures are self-reported. Claims such as "100+ partners", "repeat standardized purchases" and "several hundred million RMB raised" come from the company. No customer is named, no installed base is disclosed, and no public procurement awards were found. The hype level is moderate: there is no inflated AI narrative, but there is no third-party data either.
  • The product name may collide with a trademark. "Fluent" is also the name of Tecan's flagship liquid-handling platform, which could cause trademark trouble if Xuanren sells overseas. No overseas sales have been found so far.

5. Financials / Funding

  • Revenue / profit: not disclosed. The only figure is over RMB 10M in orders in the first year (company claim, 2021).
  • Funding history (amounts mostly not disclosed):
Round Date Amount Investors
Angel 2020-10 not disclosed Zhangke Lingyi (张科领弋)
Pre-A 2021-10 tens of millions RMB (angel + Pre-A ≈ RMB 100M combined, company claim) Oriza Seed (元禾原点, lead), Shunwei Capital
Equity 2022-07 not disclosed Shunwei Capital (single source)
A 2024-05 not disclosed Two "enterprise-management" limited partnerships (possibly holding vehicles; single source)
A+ (strategic) 2024-12 not disclosed "Huatai GenScript" (Huatai Zijin / GenScript-linked), Shunwei Capital
B 2025-06 not disclosed Guolian Xizhou Fund, Binhu Industrial Group (Wuxi state-owned; database entry only, no press release)
  • Cumulative funding: the company claimed "several hundred million RMB" as of December 2024. Valuation is not disclosed. No new round was found after June 2025.

6. People & Relationships

  • Founder, legal representative and largest shareholder (≈33.5%): 何雪萦 (He Xueying). She holds a bachelor's and a master's in automation from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, studied at the University of Michigan, and previously headed ABB's robotics R&D center in China.
  • Chief scientific advisor: 李刚 (Li Gang), former president of ABB Robotics China.
  • Other shareholders: Zhangke Lingyi (≈23.8%) and Oriza Seed medical fund (≈13.7%).
  • Footprint: headquarters in Zhangjiang, Shanghai, with R&D and engineering sites in Suzhou and Wuxi. The company reports about 5,000 m² of R&D and production space and 51–100 employees.
  • Peers: benyao-tech (same ABB lineage), megarobo, xtalpi, shuye-tech.
