Company
MegaRobo (镁伽科技)
China's largest lab-automation integrator, pitched as "AI + robotics for life science" — though two-thirds of revenue is industrial inspection equipment.
1. Core Product / Service
MegaRobo builds custom automation systems in two lines. Smart lab (≈32% of 2024 revenue): the Auflo liquid-handling workstation, CellVue high-content imaging, Labillion/LibraX scheduling software, cell-therapy GMP and synthetic-biology automation, plus the in-house Kunpeng Lab (鲲鹏实验室) that sells AI-driven wet-lab R&D services — a "wet-lab data factory" for AI4S. Smart manufacturing (≈68%): wafer AOI, overlay metrology and laser cutting, reusing the same vision and motion-control stack [local].
2. Target Users & Pain Points
- Pharma, CROs, IVD and synthetic-biology labs (880+ customers) that want end-to-end automated workflows instead of single instruments.
- Pain solved: the founder's framing — a Quest Diagnostics sample took ~140 hours from receipt to result while the instrument run took ~3 minutes; scientists spend ~80% of time on repetitive manual handling [local].
- Since 2024 the company has repositioned toward "All in AI": supplying the high-throughput experimental data that AI models need.
3. Competitive Landscape
| Player | Positioning | Vs. MegaRobo |
|---|---|---|
| xtalpi | Listed AI drug discovery + robotic labs | Sells results and IP, has public-market funding; its robotics revenue (≈RMB 265M in 2025) is about a third of MegaRobo's lab revenue scale |
| dp-technology | AI4S platform, open-source Uni-Lab-OS | Attacks the software/OS layer from above — could erode integrators' software premium |
| 奔曜科技 Benyao / 玄刃科技 Xuanren | Standardized lab robots (ex-ABB founders) | Productized, capital-light, export-oriented; much smaller but cleaner model |
| 汇像科技 XImaging | Vision-origin lab-automation integrator | Same custom-integration model, smaller scale |
| Hamilton / Tecan / Beckman | Global liquid-handling incumbents | Standard products with software ecosystems; domestic hardware sells at roughly half the price |
4. Unique Observations
- Narrative vs revenue mismatch: it raises money as an AI-for-life-science company but earns mostly from semiconductor and battery inspection, so neither AI-drug nor industrial-equipment multiples fit cleanly [local].
- Integration is not a moat by itself: squeezed from above by open lab OSes (dp-technology), sideways by better-capitalized xtalpi, and from below by customers like insilico-medicine that build their own robotic labs. Its real edge is engineering delivery across complex scenarios.
- Custom-project economics: 24–29% gross margin and heavy delivery headcount mean faster growth burns more cash — the opposite of the standard-product route Benyao and Xuanren take.
5. Financials / Funding
- Revenue: RMB 455M → 663M → 930M (2022–2024, ≈43% CAGR); order backlog ≈RMB 1.5B (Jun 2025). Ranked #1 in China's smart-lab automation (≈24% share, company prospectus claim) [local].
- Losses / cash: adjusted loss widened from ≈RMB 320M to ≈430M; operating cash outflow ≈RMB 500M a year; year-end 2024 cash RMB 458M vs short-term borrowings RMB 466M [local].
- Funding: 9 rounds, US$430M+ total. Series C (Jun 2022) ≈US$300M at ≈US$1.19B post-money (Goldman Sachs AM, AIIB-linked Asia Investment Capital, GGV); Series D (Jun 2025) ≈US$13.8M at ≈RMB 10.5B valuation [local].
- IPO: Hong Kong application filed 2025-06-25, lapsed 2025-12; not refiled as of Oct 2026. CSRC questions centered on the offshore structure and 2025 shareholding restructuring [local].
6. People & Relationships
- Founder & CEO: 黄瑜清 (Huang Yuqing), ex-RIGOL product-line manager; co-founders 乔志新 and 张琰; CTO 丁新宇.
- Investors: Sinovation Ventures (≈15%), Joy Capital (≈13%), Asia Investment Capital, Goldman Sachs, Bosch Ventures, WuXi AppTec, Sino Biological — several are also customers.
- Spin-out: 镁睿化学 (AI + automated chemistry CRO), US$26M Series A in Jan 2024.
- Peers: xtalpi, dp-technology, insilico-medicine.
