METiS TechBio (剂泰科技)

Hong Kong-listed AI nano-delivery company (7666.HK): AI-designed lipids and formulations, licensed to pharma and used in its own pipeline.

1. Core Product / Service

METiS was founded in 2020; its Hangzhou operating entity was registered in January 2020 [6]. Its core platform, NanoForge, combines a self-generated library of more than 10 million lipids with AI lipid-generation models, agents and a high-throughput experimental loop. Per the prospectus, the platform has accumulated about 100,000 experimental data points [1]. Three solutions sit on top of it:

  • AiTEM: small-molecule formulation.
  • AiLNP: nucleic-acid delivery.
  • AiRNA: mRNA sequence design.

The company claims targeted formulations in two to three months and delivery to eight organs or tissues [1][2].

Pipeline. More than 10 products: four preclinical, three clinical-stage, one pre-NDA, and two animal-health programs [1].

  • MTS-004. An orally disintegrating tablet of dextromethorphan plus quinidine for pseudobulbar affect. It met its Phase III primary endpoint in October 2025 [1].
  • MTS-105. An mRNA-encoded T-cell engager for liver cancer and liver metastases, in an investigator-initiated trial, with FDA orphan designation [1][2].
  • MTS-201. An oral TGR5 agonist in Phase I [1].

Wet-lab model: built in-house, with CRO support. METiS is the only company in its cohort with prospectus-level disclosure [1]:

  • R&D centers in Beijing, Hangzhou and Cambridge, Massachusetts.
  • More than 100 scientists and technical staff, including about 40 PhDs; over 70% of employees work in R&D.
  • The prospectus lists R&D costs as including lab materials, equipment, and professional service fees paid to CROs.

Lab floor area is not disclosed.

2. Target Users & Pain Points

  • Pharma and biotech partners that need delivery outside the liver for RNA and gene medicines, or better formulations for small molecules. METiS reports more than 30 partners. Since July 2025 it has signed five research collaborations valued at about US$45–109M per target [1]. AiTEM has been deployed on-site at Hengrui [2].
  • Its own pipeline. The fastest asset is a reformulation that de-risks the chemistry, rather than a new molecule.

3. Competitive Landscape

Player Positioning Vs. METiS
xtalpi Chinese AI + robotics discovery platform, listed Broader platform services; METiS is delivery-focused
insilico-medicine AI-native new-molecule pipeline, listed Novel chemistry; METiS's lead is a formulation
recursion-pharmaceuticals US phenomics TechBio Different data moat (cell imaging vs lipid/formulation data)
byterna Chinese circular-mRNA startup Potential LNP customer and competitor in mRNA therapeutics

4. Unique Observations

  • "AI-native company" does not mean "AI-discovered drug" here. MTS-004 combines two approved drugs in a new dosage form. The novelty is in the delivery and formulation engine, not in target or molecule discovery.
  • Revenue is deal-driven. 2025 revenue of RMB 105M came mainly from the MTS-004 upfront payment [2][4]. Gross margin jumped to 98% for the same reason [1].
  • Listing produced the best wet-lab disclosure in the cohort. Most private Chinese AI-native peers publish only phrases like "high-throughput platform". METiS's prospectus gives staffing, sites and the explicit CRO line item.
