Timberlyne Therapeutics
Keymed-anchored NewCo taking the anti-CD38 antibody CM313 into autoimmune disease outside China.
1. Core Product / Service
Timberlyne (San Diego) launched in January 2025 with exclusive worldwide rights, excluding Greater China, to CM313, an IgG1 anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody discovered by Chengdu-based Keymed Biosciences [1][2]. CD38 is highly expressed on plasma cells and plasmablasts, so CM313 is positioned for antibody-driven autoimmune disorders rather than only myeloma (where daratumumab and isatuximab are established).
CM313 has been studied in relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma, systemic lupus erythematosus and immune thrombocytopenia (ITP); a New England Journal of Medicine study reported a 95% response rate in treatment-refractory ITP [2]. Keymed's China programme has since expanded to subcutaneous CM313 in ITP, SLE, IgA nephropathy, aplastic anaemia and platelet-transfusion refractoriness [5].
2. Target Users & Pain Points
- Patients: refractory antibody-mediated autoimmune diseases (ITP, SLE, nephropathies) where B-cell-directed drugs such as anti-CD20 miss long-lived plasma cells.
- Licensor: Keymed gains a Western development vehicle while remaining the largest shareholder.
3. Competitive Landscape
| Player | Asset | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Johnson & Johnson | Daratumumab (anti-CD38) | Approved in myeloma; autoimmune use exploratory |
| Sanofi | Isatuximab / next-gen anti-CD38 | Approved in myeloma |
| CASI Pharmaceuticals | CID-103 (anti-CD38) | Another China-linked anti-CD38 aimed at autoimmunity |
| candid-therapeutics | BCMA / CD20 TCEs | Alternative route to plasma-cell / B-cell depletion |
4. Unique Observations
- All clinical evidence still sits in China. A ClinicalTrials.gov search for CM313 returns 14 studies, every one sponsored by Keymed or Chinese hospitals; none lists Timberlyne as sponsor as of October 2026 [5]. Discovery, CMC and the human data package come from Keymed, while the NewCo's job is to design and fund ex-China registration trials — the standard NewCo division of labour [3].
- Licensor as controlling-scale shareholder. Keymed holds 25.79% after the Series A, making it Timberlyne's largest shareholder — a higher stake than Hengrui's 19.9% in kailera-therapeutics [3].
- Keymed runs repeated NewCos. It previously spun CM512 and CM536 into Belenos Biosciences (July 2024, ~30% stake), so Timberlyne is part of a deliberate strategy rather than a one-off [3].
5. Financials / Funding
- Series A: $180M (January 2025), led by Abingworth, Bain Capital Life Sciences and Venrock Healthcare Capital Partners; Boyu Capital, Lilly Asia Ventures, Braidwell and 3H Health Investment participated [2].
- Keymed terms: launch coverage described an "undisclosed" upfront plus milestones, royalties and equity [2]; Keymed later reported $30M in upfront and near-term payments and 25.79% ownership [3][4].
- No later financing, trial start or exit has been publicly reported as of October 2026.
6. People & Relationships
