Archon Biosciences
Seattle Baker-lab spinout building "antibody cages", antibodies wrapped in AI-designed protein scaffolds, to control where drugs go in the body.
1. Core Product / Service
Archon's product class is the Antibody Cage (AbC): an antibody assembled with computationally designed protein structures into a defined geometry [1][2]. The aim is to control two things that a normal antibody leaves to chance: how the drug distributes through tissues, and how it engages its target, for example by clustering receptors [2][3]. The concept was first published in 2021 by the company's future CEO and CTO while they worked in david-baker's lab at the University of Washington [3].
The company describes its platform as aimed at "challenging targets underlying diseases of paramount urgency". No target, indication or development candidate has been disclosed [1]. As of 2026-10, no partnership or follow-on financing after the October 2024 seed has been found.
Wet lab. Archon runs its own protein lab in Seattle. A current job posting asks for optimization of bacterial and mammalian expression systems for protein production and purification, and for "producing and assessing large numbers of de novo protein components" [4]. An earlier, now-closed posting focused on in vitro and ex vivo functional assays of antibody cages [4]. Press coverage at launch put the team at 17 full-time staff; databases list 11-50. In vivo pharmacology capacity, lab area and CRO partners are undisclosed.
2. Target Users & Pain Points
- Patients/pipeline: undisclosed; the format suits targets where tissue selectivity or receptor clustering decides efficacy and safety.
- Pain addressed: conventional antibodies have fixed geometry and broad distribution, which leads to off-tissue toxicity or weak agonism. Designed cages make these properties engineering variables.
3. Competitive Landscape
| Player | Approach | Vs. Archon |
|---|---|---|
| Accipiter Biosciences | IPD spinout; fully de novo multifunctional proteins | Sister spinout; pharma-partnered |
| xaira-therapeutics | Baker-lineage generative antibodies, >$1B | Same lineage, broader platform |
| generate-biomedicines | Generative biologics in Phase 3 | Far more advanced |
| nabla-bio / absci | AI antibody design | Optimize binding; Archon also engineers geometry and distribution |
4. Unique Observations
- Founding date versus technology age. Business databases list 2023 as the founding year, but the core technology dates to a 2021 paper [3]. No incorporation filing was located, so treat the founding year as approximate.
- Pure-pipeline posture at seed stage. Unlike sister spinout Accipiter, which signed Pfizer and Kite deals before launch, Archon has announced no partner. That makes it one of the few US AI-biologics startups founded in 2023 or later that rely on equity funding alone.
- Protein production as the main in-house capability. The job posts emphasize making and testing many designed components, which is typical of IPD-lineage companies. The model generates designs cheaply, so expression and characterization capacity sets the pace.
5. Financials / Funding
- Seed (2024-10-30): $20M, led by Madrona Ventures; DUMAC, Sahsen Ventures, WRF Capital, Pack Ventures, Alexandria Venture Investments and Cornucopian Capital participated [1].
- Total: $20M. No later round has been confirmed. A "$16M Series A" headline on one aggregator page belongs to an unrelated company.
6. People & Relationships
- CEO & co-founder: James Lazarovits. CTO & co-founder: George Ueda. Both are former Baker-lab postdocs [3].
- Other listed co-founders: Lance Stewart and david-baker (database listing; not confirmed in company releases).
- Investors: Madrona, WRF Capital, Alexandria.
- Peers: Accipiter Biosciences, xaira-therapeutics, generate-biomedicines.
